We are going to eventually move the rewritten code to a single package, as opposed to dozens packages that combined hold no more than a few megabytes of code and data.

The python library sounds like a perfect starting point for it. Besides, the install procedure used for it in vyatta-cfg is a dirty hack and should be replaced anyway.
