Adopt a new branch/release naming scheme?
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Looks like using chemical elements for release names is getting even more popular. OpenDayLight used it, and now I've found that BunsenLabs Linux does it as well. https://www.bunsenlabs.org/news.html

Before we freeze 1.2.0, perhaps it's time to think whether we want to go on with the old naming, or make up somethng else. Ideally it should have some natural order.

Some ideas:

  • Constellations sorted by area: Hydra, Virgo, Ursa Major etc., 88 of them.
  • Named stars sorted by apparent magnitude: Sirius, Canopus etc., lots of them
  • Telecommunication pioneers by... age? Morse, Popov, Marconi, Bell, Vernam, Cerf, Perlman, lots of them.

Add yours.

@UnicronNL also likes constellations, so let's go with it.

Starting with the smallest by area, the first one is Crux (the Southern Cross).

For the reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/88_modern_constellations_by_area

dmbaturin lowered the priority of this task from Normal to Low.
